Learning Together

New resource – CD Rom 'Learning Together', produced by Healthier Scotland and NHS Health Scotland, reviews sexual health and relationship resources to support parents and carers. The evidence is quite clear that discussing relationships at an early age can have a lasting impact on the way children and young people develop into confident, self-assured adults able to negotiate their way through the ups and downs of life. Raising sexual health issues from he early years onwards can support better relationships in the long term.

Talking about sexual health is never easy, no matter what age you are or what your background is. And talking with your children is even more daunting specially when you think about how you learned about the 'birds and the bees'! That doesn't mean you don't want to have these discussions, it is just that sometimes you don't know what to say, where to start and what information is appropriate to what age.

This resource is designed to help professionals who might work with parents in a one-to-one basis or in a group setting. And it should also help parents or carers work their way through the maze of resources that confront them when they want to do the 'right' thing in preparing children and young people. The books, DVDs, CDs and websites identified have been reviewed by both professionals and parents with comments on their suitability, age relevance and topics covered set out to help readers identify what resource(s) might best fit their needs.

Using this resource will ensure that parents/carers are making a valuable contribution in support of the Early Years Strategy, Respect and Responsibility and also towards achieving the goals set out in Curriculum for Excellence, while enhancing the existing partnership between parents/carers and schools.
